What is the New Wine Discipleship Year?
New Wine Discipleship Year (NWDY) at St Barnabas is all about learning to know, love and serve Jesus Christ by being immersed in God’s word, filled with God’s Spirit and sent out to build God’s Kingdom.
Each week consists of one full Wednesday of teaching at the All Saints’ Woodford Wells (ASWW) hub, alongside practical ministry experience in a local church. Over the year, you’ll also embark on two residential trips (one in the UK, one in Spain) and one overseas mission trip, and have opportunities to serve at national New Wine conferences.
Who is it for?
What will I do?
What does it cost and when is it?
At St Barnabas, we welcome applications from those aged 18-25 looking to:
Develop a secure understanding of your identity in Christ
Grow in reading and understanding God’s word
Increase in godliness, self-discipline, and joy
Be equipped to use your spiritual gifts to serve God’s church
Spend a year in church-based ministry
The DY has three core elements: Local Teaching, Local Experience and a National Programme.
Local Teaching
Teaching takes place at our connected hub: our hub is located at All Saint's, Woodford Wells (ASWW). Every Wednesday, you will receive teaching at ASWW; starting the day with worship and prayer, followed by morning and afternoon teaching sessions, in addition to termly assignments throughout the year.
The curriculum at ASWW hub is divided into four categories:
Theology
Spirituality
Leadership
Mission
Local Experience
Every DY student is placed in a local church - and this is where we come in! You will be placed at St Barnabas, where you'll get experience in particular areas of ministry, and put into practice what you've learnt in the teaching programme.
The placements that we would love to prioritise at St Barnabas are:
Children
Worship and Creativity
But if you are interested in other areas of ministry, we would still love to hear from you!
National Programme
The national DY programme consists of two residential trips and two conference serving opportunities.
The first residential is based in the UK and covers the core topic of identity in Christ. The second residential is based in Spain and covers the topic of Kingdom life.
There is also the opportunity to serve at two conferences. Everyone serves at New Wine in the summer - your team place, catering, campling and ticket are all included in the year. There is also the chance to serve at another conference run by New Wine (e.g. New Wine Leadership Conference).
St Barnabas will cover your DY expenses and any travel expenses related to the NWDY. We will also help towards your accommodation.
The year starts in September 2026 and finished after the New Wine Summer Festival 2027. Please note that we do not take anyone starting late on the course.
How do I apply?
The application process is simple. Fill out the form below, and specify the hub (Woodford Wells) and the church (St Barnabas, Cambridge) that you're applying to. We will then be in touch to arrange further interviews.
For more information, check out the national NWDY website.
