We are so excited to be reading through the Bible in One Year together, starting on 9th September.

One of the best ways we can learn about the story of God’s plan for our lives is through a daily commitment to opening our hearts and minds to God through the spiritual discipline of Bible reading. This is something that as a church we really feel God is calling us to in this next season; renewing our desire and passion for daily dwelling in God’s word.

Each day we will read about 3 chapters of the bible plus a Psalm - this should only take 20 minutes or so. There’s also some great videos provided by the Bible Project which are a really helpful additional resource.

There’s a few different ways you can follow along:

The Acts of the Bible

At the start of the academic year, we’ll be taking 6 weeks in our Sunday services to look at the bible as a whole in a series called ’The Acts of the Bible’. We’ll be looking at 6 key acts that form the wider narrative of God’s plan of redemption. This will mean that when we read the passage each day, we can keep the big picture of the story of Scripture in mind (if you miss a week you can listen back here)

Tips on how to use the plan:

  • Have a routine. Try to read at the same time every day. Set an alarm if it will help you to remember. Consistency is key.

  • Morning is best. There is nothing better than starting the day in God’s word!

  • Some might prefer to break up their reading throughout the day, reading one chapter in the morning and one chapter in the evening. It is important to find the pace that works best for you given your schedule, commitments and the natural limitations of your life.

  • Create a space that you read in.

  • If you miss a day, don’t panic! Keep going and try and find time to catch up if you can.

  • One Psalm is listed each day.  Pray through this slowly making its words your own.

  • If reading a passage and a Psalm is too much, just focus on reading the passage to begin with and then add in reading the Psalm when you feel able.

  • Use the videos as you find most helpful, however remember they’re an additional resource. Don’t let them take away from time spent with God dwelling in his word.

  • Keep a journal of what God has said to you as you read the daily passage. Write down any questions you have or anything you don’t understand. Talk about what you’ve written with your Barnabas Community.

  • Why not buy a  journalling Bible to use as you go through this plan this year?

  • Chat over coffee on a Sunday and ask others what they think about the passages we have read over the week.

  • Finish by praying - take something that you have read into your daily practice of prayer.
